  • NEWS: MARRIAGE STATISTICS IN WESTERN AUSTRALIA

3 November at 00:33 from atlas

Well who doesn't love a good statistic...

Did you know in 2014 marriage registrations in Western Australia peaked at the giddy heights of 13286 and have been falling steadily ever since.

After the legalisation of same-sex marriages in Australia in late 2017, the year 2018 was the only year since 2014 that saw a small trend upwards in marriage registrations.

With the arrival of COVID-19 in the year 2020, Western Australia has seen a little under 18% less marriage registrations compared to the previous year.

But this is not the largest drop in marriage registrations Western Australia has seen. In 2001, only 9208 couples "tied the knot" which equates to almost 18.5% less marriage registrations compared to the previous year. This large drop was most likely attributed to another "bug" affectionately known as "Y2K" aka "the year 2000". It seems those who were planning a marriage were waiting for the year 2000 to finally say "I DO".

In the year 2000 there was a rise of over 15% more marriage registrations compared to the previous year. The novelty of "Y2K" certainly made alot of couples "love sick" that year.

Will the lifting of lockdowns and the opening of closed borders see a new trend emerge with an increase in marriages in the coming years?..Or will the trend continue downwards?

Stay tuned for the 2021 stats!
